Living with Cancer
I have a special reason for asking your help in supporting the Lance Armstrong Foundation. On Dec. 30, 2006 I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. Because the cancer was discovered early, with the support of my doctor I was able to postpone treatment for two years while Lee and I tried to have another child. With the pregnancy well established, on Friday October 31st 2008 I underwent a robotic prostatectomy at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. After spending the night in the hospital I was released the following day. My surgical margins were negative - meaning that they got "all of it", and I've been given an 80-90% chance of being fully cured, very acceptable since no one gets 100%. We are incredibly pleased to announce the birth of Axel Vance Purdy who joined us on March 21st 2009.
As someone who raced bicycles for many years, I have been keenly aware of Lance’s accomplishments in cycling since as far back as 1990, and later, in overcoming a much more serious cancer situation than the one I have been facing. His example, and the mission of the foundation, are extremely important to me.
How to Pledge
- Please consider making a direct pledge of any amount to the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

On November 1st I celebrated one year cancer free by running the 2009 ING NYC Marathon. Last year, I was two days out of surgery and watched it on TV. Hard to imagine a bigger contrast. My time was 14 minutes faster than my first attempt and good enough to qualify for the 2010 Boston Marathon. Look for me on the starting line April 19th.
